What types of eCollin courses are offered?

There are two types of eCollin classes:

·         Web courses - Web courses offer students the flexibility to obtain an education via the Internet.  Instructional materials, readings, assignments, and in some cases class discussions may be accessed whether students are at home, at work on or vacation.  Some web courses may require onsite or proctored testing at an approved testing center in any geographic location.

·         Blended learning courses - Blended learning courses require some on-campus time and offer the flexibility to incorporate distance learning with on-site instruction.

For additional information regarding your course, check the Course Section Notes in the E-Schedule or Look-up Classes section in the registration schedule (click on the five digit CRN listed with the course) to view important class information.  For more information, please see the Accessing Course Notes tutorial on the Technical Support page under Cougarweb tutorials.

How do I prepare my computer for an online class?

Listed below are several guidelines for you to ensure your system is configured for using Blackboard:

Minimum System requirements

There are specific minimum requirements for a computer system to be compatible with Blackboard and other online learning resources.  A list of updated computer system requirements can be found on the “Blackboard Resources” tab from the main eLC website.

Browser Check

Check the link Current Blackboard compatible Browsers to see the most current compatiable web browsers for Blackboard.

Pop-up Blockers
The Blackboard Learning System sometimes uses small browser windows to deliver requested content. Some pop-up blockers incorrectly interpret these small windows as pop-ups and block them. If you have installed a pop-up blocker, turn it off while using the Learning System.  To do this, you will need to follow the instructions to disable it as determined by your browser, firewall and/or antivirus software.  For more information, please see the
Pop-up Blocker tutorials for Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers on the Technical Support page under Cougarweb tutorials.

Java Security Certificate
After logging in to the Blackboard Learning System, you will be prompted to accept a Java Security Certificate. You should click on the box that indicates to “Always trust content from this publisher”. You must click Run to ensure that Learning System functionality using Java will work properly in your browser.  You should also click on the box that indicates to “Always trust content from this publisher”.  For more information, please see the Java Security Certificate tutorial on the Technical Support page under Cougarweb tutorials.

Why do I need to disable Pop-up blocker?

If you are unable to view discussion postings, quiz windows, and download links in Blackboard, you may need to disable pop-up blocking in your browser. Pop-up blockers work in the background while you browse the Internet. When they detect a pop-up window that may be an unwanted advertisement, they automatically close the window. Pop-up blocker can prevent Blackboard from performing properly as it cannot distinguish between an advertisement and a necessary Blackboard pop-up window.  If you are still having difficulty after you have disabled pop-up blocker(s) or if you are having difficulty disabling your pop-up blocker(s), please contact the eLC at 972.881.5870 or email elc@collin.edu. For more information, please see the Pop-up Blocker tutorials for Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers on the Technical Support page under Cougarweb tutorials.
